Try eight of the best at boutique winery event in CHB

Eight boutique wineries are joining forces to share their wares with Central Hawke’s Bay residents at a ‘Meet the Makers’ event to be held at Waipawa’s Lime Rock Wines on Sunday 27 November from 11am to 5pm.

In addition to wine tasting and sales of current, special one-offs and library releases, visitors can meet the winemakers and chat about their wines.

Argyll East School will be providing food as a fundraising project, and people are encouraged to stay and enjoy music from local musicians.

The event is a regular one organised by the Hawke’s Bay Boutique Winemakers’ Group made up of small owner-operator wineries producing less than 10,000 cases. A number do not have a cellar door of their own and enjoy these special days where they can meet people and watch them try their wines.

Lyn Bevin, executive officer of Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers, says “The atmosphere is always relaxed and casual with a good variety of interesting and new wines. If you want to see what’s different from many commercial wines this is a great place to start.”

Those attending include Tukipo River Estate, de la terre Winery, Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate, Ash Ridge Wines, BushHawk Vineyard, Beach House Wines, Lime Rock Wines and Pukeora Estate.

The featured winery is de la terre Winery. Found off the beaten track on the Napier Taihape Road, ‘de la terre’ boasts an earth brick winery and cellar door with leadlight windows and furniture, all handcrafted by its owner and winemaker, Tony Prichard. He says that this event will introduce his wines to Central Hawke’s Bay. “It’s almost like a launch. Our wines are largely traditional with emphasis on minimal handling to retain the integrity and concentration of fruit.”

The Hawke’s Bay Boutique Winemaker’s event ‘Meet the Makers’ at Lime Rock Wines at 601 Tikokino Rd, 6km west of Waipawa.

These events generally take place on a monthly basis around the region. The next one will be held at Beach House Wines on the Cape Coast on December 18, followed by another on January 29 at de la terre Winery.
