New World St Martins supermarket on schedule
Work on building a New World supermarket at St Martins is on schedule and should be ready for opening in the middle of next year.
The $20 million project, which will also include other retail outlets such as a bank, café and chemist, is at the foundation stage.
Roger Davidson, General Manager Property and Retail Development for Foodstuffs South Island, said that the piling work, which took three months to complete, was finished in October and now the focus was on the foundations and underground services.
“There may not be much to see above ground until the new year, but once we start on that stage the building will move along pretty quickly.
“It is a $20 million project all up and should be a definite asset to the community,” he said.
The supermarket will be slightly bigger than the previous building, but because it will be a much more modern building with modern layout, it will be able to carry a substantially bigger and wider range of items.
“We are very committed to getting St Martins back to normality as quickly as possible,” he said.
