Domino’s Pizza Levin Aims to Boost Food Bank Coffers
Levin residents won’t be going hungry this summer if the town’s Domino’s Pizza store has anything to do with it.
For the second year running, Domino’s Pizza Levin will donate $1 from every pizza sold during the month of November to the Levin Inter-Church Food Bank, boosting the food bank’s coffers just in time for the busy summer period.
Domino’s Levin franchisee Sherry Champion says she joined forces with the food bank about 18 months ago.
Every week she donates pizzas that haven’t been picked up as well as those that have been mistakenly made wrong, and would otherwise be thrown away.
“Sometimes pizzas get accidentally made on the wrong base, but other than that, there’s nothing wrong with them. Then occasionally someone orders a pizza but accidentally orders it from the wrong store, so rather than seeing them just thrown away, we’d rather give them go to a family who is struggling to make ends meet and may not be able to put a meal on the table,” says Mrs Champion
Last year her store donated hundreds of dollars to the food bank from Dough Raisers held every day throughout the month of November, and this year she plans to do the same.
“The Levin Inter-Church Food Bank does such an amazing job making sure everyone in our wonderful community has food in their cupboards and on the table,” she says.
“The community has given us so much amazing support since we’ve been here, it’s only right that we support them in return.”
Levin Salvation Army community ministries manager James Lynn says with demand for food parcels up on the same time last year, the contribution from Domino’s Pizza will go a long way to make sure that no family goes hungry at Christmas and in the early new year when demand traditionally spikes.
“We’re always grateful for whatever contribution we get, but money is particularly useful as we always need to buy fresh produce like milk, meat, fruit and vegetables,” he says.
Domino’s Pizza Levin is located at 245 Oxford St, Levin. The Salvation Army can be found at 11 Durham Street, Levin.
