Fisher & Paykel’s design-led approach to crafting home appliances has seen the company’s products and people recognised within the design industry’s most coveted awards.
Three Fisher & Paykel kitchen appliances placed in the highly competitive consumer category at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Awards – dubbed the Oscars of the New Zealand design world.
The Designer Oven (90cm) was awarded a Gold Pin, while the matching Designer Cooktop range and the DishDrawerTM Wide also received Silver awards.
Best Award judges described the winning appliance as “a refined, well-resolved and considered piece of industrial design” and praised the beautifully lit graphic selection panel for its clarity, usability and visual appeal.
A designer with a lead role on all three product projects, Fisher & Paykel Head of Industrial Design Mark Elmore, was also presented with the esteemed John Britten Black Pin for Outstanding Achievement in his field.
The Black Pin acknowledges an individual who has made a major contribution to design nationally and internationally, with past winners including former Fisher & Paykel chairman Gary Paykel and the award’s namesake John Britten, whose design philosophy has long inspired the company.
Fisher & Paykel Appliances Managing Director Stuart Broadhurst said: “Fisher & Paykel is about creating appliances for people – products that make life easier and better. Mark’s design leadership has helped make that vision a reality time and again, with the resulting products having an incredible influence on everyday life in homes around the globe.
Mark and his team have been responsible for such appliance shifts as the DishDrawer, a product that built the platform to take Fisher & Paykel to world markets and led to a step change in kitchen design internationally.
Fisher & Paykel’s ‘Social Kitchen’ installation by Grey Lynn design agency Alt Group was also recognised with the supreme award in the graphic category, the Purple Pin. The installation, unveiled for Urbis Design Day in 2011, brought Fisher & Paykel’s appreciation for the kitchen as the social hub of the home to life in an event that judges said was “artfully co-ordinated” with “high end style”.
