Off road motorcycle sales continue to grow
The Motor
Industry Association (MIA) has released motorcycle sales
data for the last nine months based on registrations and off
road (unregistered) retail sales. The MIA represents the
interests of all importers and distributors of major vehicle
brands in New Zealand, including cars, heavy vehicles,
motorcycles, scooters and ATVs.
Clive Hellyar, Manager of the Motorcycle Group within the MIA said that off road motorcycles and ATV sales had increased by 681 units (a 7.4% increase) compared with the same period last year.
With total sales of 5123 units so far this year four wheeled ATVs had been the largest contributor to this increase. Sales of two wheeled motorcycles used off road in agriculture were also strong and this could be seen as an indication that this sector of the economy was continuing to recover.
Total on road registrations continued to fall short of last year’s sales with the under 50cc class increasing in sales by 12% (255 units) which had compensated for the 10% reduction in sales of larger motorcycles. Under 50cc sales are dominated by scooters.
The top three in off
road product sales were Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. These
three companies also led in on road registrations.
