Trains on a plane

Trains on a plane

KiwiRail has found a captive audience for the promotion of its world famous Scenic train services in an unusual place – on a Jetstar aircraft.

From today through to mid-November, customers flying around New Zealand on Jetstar will be treated to images of New Zealand’s unique landscape that would normally be seen out of the carriage windows of the Overlander.

KiwiRail’s Tranz Scenic Manager Tom Evers-Swindell says the images, which have been placed on the overhead baggage lockers, offer entirely different scenery to what you’d normally experience on a plane and encourage people to see more of New Zealand by train.

“We’re expecting our brand and our services to get noticed because people don’t anticipate seeing trains being promoted on a plane. The images give people holiday inspiration for what they want to do once they land.

“While air travel does get you to your destination faster, you do miss the views, and the scenery depicted in the promotional images provides a taste of the appealing outlook on train travel. That’s what we’re hoping to emphasise with this promotional campaign.

“We’re also targeting a large market – more than 30,000 local and international passengers a month fly on the domestic routes that Jetstar operates,” Mr Evers-Swindell says.

“We want to encourage more people to experience New Zealand’s beautiful landscape by rail, and our trains on a plane campaign is just another way to capture the attention of future Tranz Scenic travelers.”
