Construction company cleans up business awards

A construction company was the victor at the Westpac Auckland West Business Awards 2011 on Friday night.

Henderson construction company Canam Group was crowned Westpac Supreme Business Award 2011 winner at the prestigious Gala Dinner, also taking away the Unitec Excellence in Innovation, Babich Wines Excellence in Export, and Douglas Pharmaceuticals Best Large Business awards.

Canam Group is a privately owned and operated construction company offering services from design through to construction and building maintenance.

Established in 1955, the company has built some of the most iconic buildings in west Auckland, including the WCC Civic Centre and The Trusts Stadium, along with major projects such as the Auckland War Memorial Museum upgrade, Auckland University School of Engineering, Auckland Performing Arts Centre and large projects in Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

Judge Chad Wilkie says that Canam Group’s diversity as a company made it the clear supreme winner for 2011.

“In the past 10 years this west Auckland construction company has evolved into a sophisticated operation using innovation, and the latest technology and marketing techniques, to improve its business in a difficult environment,” Mr Wilkie says.

“It has won major contracts in both the private and public spheres, while also using smart strategic thinking to target growth areas such as interiors and leaky building repairs. Canam Group has also landed contracts offshore. To do this it demonstrates an ability to cut end costs through new ways of achieving the desired result for less. The judges unanimously agreed that Canam Group was the all round best business and supreme award winner for 2011.”

Canam Group Managing Director Loukas Petrou says the company is pleased to be recognised with the major award.

“As a proud west Auckland business, we are thrilled to have won three categories and been honoured as supreme business in 2011. Canam Group has contributed to the local economy for more than 55 years and is a major local employer in west Auckland. Our future plans are to continue to grow our business here in New Zealand and also in the Pacific, which we see as a growing market,” says Mr Petrou.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development’s Manager Business Development – West, Sukesh Sukumaran, says the Westpac Auckland West Business Awards highlights the best in business.

“These awards play an important role in celebrating business success. Canam Group is a fine example of a west Auckland business excelling at their work throughout New Zealand and into the Pacific. On behalf of Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development I extend our congratulations to Canam Group, worthy winner of Supreme Business 2011,” says Mr Sukumaran.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) facilitates the Westpac Auckland West Business Awards 2011.
