Wellington Leading Growth in Retail Sales
Figures released today show that the Wellington region is leading the rest of the country in terms of retail sales growth.
This is good news according to the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, especially as it comes at a time of public sector restraint.
“Seasonally adjusted, retail sales in the Wellington region increased 1.8% in the June quarter and 7.7% year on year,” said Chamber Policy Manager Jeremy Harding.
“This compares with 1.7% and 4.1% for the country as a whole. Over the last year the upward trend in Wellington sales has been stronger than all other regions.
“Wellington has been fortunate that increased visitor numbers have provided a boost to retail sales. Latest figures show that Wellington guest nights were up 9.5% in the year to June with strong growth in international visitors in particular.
“This combined with improving consumer confidence bodes well for Wellington.
“With the World of Wearable Art and the Rugby World Cup approaching, the retail and hospitality sectors can be optimistic that the upward trend will continue.
“In the longer term, however, much needs to be done to put the Wellington economy on the right footing.
“The Chamber will continue to work with the government and local councils to ensure the right policies are in place to promote a business friendly environment in Wellington,” Mr Harding concluded.
