Nelson Marlborough hotel rooms starting to fill up for nights of key world cup fixtures
Hotels in the Nelson Marlborough region are starting to fill up for the nights of key Rugby World Cup fixtures – but
there’s still time to book a room.
Demand has been strong for rooms in Nelson for September 18-20 for the Italy vs Russian game, September 26-28 for Italy
vs USA and from September 29-October 4 for Australia vs Russia.
New Zealand Hotel Council regional chairman Brett Inkster, manager of the Heartland Hotel, Marlborough, said that demand
for rooms for those periods was also flowing into other parts of the region.
Mr Inkster said bookings were also brisk for the first half of October and, while games were all being held in Nelson,
visitors were clearly planning to take the opportunity to explore the region.
“The key dates are filling up well on and around the key fixtures,” He said. “There is still some availability on those
dates, certainly in the wider Marlborough region, and plenty of availability outside key dates.”
Hotels in the region have also reported increased interest from the leisure market with strong performances over school
holiday periods.
New Zealand Hotel Council (NZHC) Executive Officer Rachael Shadbolt added: “It’s great that the Nelson Marlborough
region looks set to benefit from strong numbers of tourists visiting for the Rugby World Cup and people should get their
bookings in to avoid disappointment.
“We’re pleased the message is getting through that, while the World Cup is putting some pressure on rooms in key centres
during the tournament, much of the rest of the country is still open for business.”
