APN announces News Editor and Assistant Editor appointments at Herald on Sunday
The Herald on Sunday, the best read Sunday newspaper in the North Island, is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Editors.
Edward Rooney has been appointed News Editor of the Herald on Sunday. Previously Editor of APN’s weekly community newspaper The Aucklander, Edward has now moved to a leadership position at the Herald on Sunday.
During his time at The Aucklander, the newspaper won a Qantas Media Award for best community paper in 2008 and 2009. At the Qantas Media Awards 2010 Community Newspaper Awards 2010, Edward was named Senior Journalist of the Year for newspapers (40,000 circulation and over).
Edward has also worked for the Sunday Star-Times, The Dominion Post and Truth, and had a long stint as Editor of the Central Leader and Auckland City Harbour News. He has also been Chief Reporter at the North Shore Times.
Bryce Johns, Editor, Herald on Sunday, highlighted Edward’s experience and commitment to training young journalists as a key factor in his selection. “The Herald on Sunday’s team of young, up-and-coming go getters will benefit from the guidance Edward can bring to maintaining the standard of the paper’s stories and breaking news.”
Edward takes up the position of News Editor on August 30.
The News Editor appointment comes a couple of months after Estelle Sarney, selected from the team at sister publication The New Zealand Herald, took up the reins as Assistant Editor at the Herald on Sunday.
Over the last year as Acting Features Editor at the Herald, Estelle launched Weekend magazine - one of the recent success stories for the newspaper. Previously, Estelle held the position of Editor of SundayHomes and HeraldHomes which she re-launched at the start of her time there. A very experienced journalist, Estelle has a 26-year career spanning newspapers, magazines and television both in New Zealand and internationally. She won a Qantas Media Award for her investigative stories at The Listener. Estelle’s first success at Herald on Sunday has been the launch of Living, the new magazine that reflects what Kiwis love doing on Sundays.
Bryce Johns, editor, Herald on Sunday, said “Estelle is a fantastic addition to our team – her experience in launching and developing new publications has already been invaluable for Living.”
