“Unashamedly” Auckland Website Goes Live

“Unashamedly” Auckland Website Goes Live

Aucklanders will get a sweet surprise on their way to work tomorrow as thousands of packets of Jaffas are handed out to commuters to announce the arrival of a brand new website, which like the JAFA, is quintessentially Auckland.

Aucklandnow.co.nz celebrates everything Auckland - from breaking news and sports coverage, to weather and traffic updates, the best cafes, the latest in entertainment and events along with social news, blogs, reviews and interactive games.

Editor Miriyana Alexander, from Fairfax Media, the website publisher, says the company did extensive research to find out what Aucklanders wanted and she says early indications show they are very happy with the result.

“We’re off to a great start. More and more people are checking out the site, they love our design and we have just brought on some great bloggers, Richard Boock, Catherine Woulfe and Bridget Jones” she says.

The website draws on the strength of Fairfax’s large team of Auckland based editorial staff and suburban newspapers which will keep Aucklanders ahead on everything that is happening in the city.

“The website is unashamedly Auckland. It’s all about Auckland, for Aucklanders.”

Visitors to the site can also play and win prizes like iPad 2’s through a fun interactive game on the website.

The official launch kicks off tomorrow at 7.30am at No 1 Queen Street café where packets of Jaffas will be given out to commuters and giant Panasonic screens will stream live news and content from aucklandnow.co.nz to Aucklanders on the outside of the café. It is the first time the technology has been used in New Zealand.

The website content will be broadcast on the outside of the café via a clever piece of locally created software while inside iPads will be available for use by the public to get their daily news and views.

Miriyana says that she hopes Aucklanders will keep her team in touch with what’s happening in their neighbourhoods via email at news@aucklandnow.co.nz.

The new site replaces the old Auckland Stuff section within stuff.co.nz.
