Alt Group Wins Nine Red Dots at World’s Most Illustrious Design Contest
Auckland based multidisciplinary design company, Alt Group has added to its already impressive awards tally for 2011 by
picking up nine red dots at one of the world’s largest and most internationally acclaimed design competitions, the red dot awards.
The red dot awards, held each year in Germany, recognise the best in product design, communication design, and design concepts from around
the world. Fifteen jury members, all of whom are internationally recognised design experts, assessed every one of the
6,468 entries from 40 countries in a rigorous judging process that lasted several days. Just 608 works were awarded a
red dot.
Four red dots were awarded to Alt Group for the LATE and I AM campaigns for the Auckland Museum. The I AM campaign was developed from
an acronym of Auckland Museum, and is a pattern language developed as part of the identity of the museum, which can be
applied across all the museum’s communications. The I AM acronym was used to dramatic effect in large neon letters on
the exterior of the museum, combined with the word LATE to promote the Museum’s nighttime events.
The other red dots were for Black Grace Verses posters; Karen Walker website; Warren & Mahoney website; for the Orca merino look book and for their XMAS, 2010 client gift, a quirky, chocolate computer
keyboard designed to subtly bring attention to the company’s name, Alt.
Last year Alt Group took home seven coveted red dot awards. In 2009 the group scooped four red dots and then went on to win the supreme red dot grand prix for communication design, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious design accolade.
Professor Dr Peter Zec, the founder and CEO of the red dot awards, said that year after year the jury was overwhelmed by the wealth and variety of entries submitted.
“In 2011, the jury again used its expert knowledge to assess the creative achievements of design ‘veterans’ but also of
new up-and-coming designers, placing great emphasis on originality, emotional and design quality as well as conciseness.
“The result is deserved winners that stood out among the thousands of entries from 40 countries thanks to their
excellent design.”
All of the winners will be celebrated at an award ceremony on October 7, 2011 in the Konzerhaus in Berlin. Afterwards
the Designers’ Night party will be held in Alte Munze Berlin and the special exhibition, “Designs on stage–winners red dot award: communication design 2011” will also be launched in the venue.

The red dot design award
The red dot design award is the world’s largest design competition. The Design Zentgrum Nordrhein Westfalen began
honouring excellent design as far back as 1954, when it was called Industrieform e.V. The sought after red dot has since become established as an internationally recognized seal of quality, and is now awarded in different
disciplines: product design, design concept and communication design. The winning works are displayed in the red dot
museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of contemporary design.
