Managing cultural differences at work: Sociodramatic exploration of working with other cultures at HRINZ Conference

Human Resources Institute of New Zealand conference participants will have the opportunity to experience sociodrama as
they explore the way cultures interact in the workplace at their annual conference in Wellington next week.
Presenter, John Faisandier will use sociodrama, an interactive method that allows participants to actually experience
cultural difference and then reflect on how this impacts on them and their work.
“The tensions between cultures, the different values and expectations that people have, can pull human resource
professionals and managers between giving in for fear of offending cultural sensitivities or becoming autocratic and
rigid in order to preserve good business functioning” says Faisandier, whose company, TUF: Thriving Under Fire
specialises in training people to manage workplace emotions.
“Having a basic understanding of cultural difference is a first step to getting the most out of the diversity in
multicultural workplaces”, he says. “It also speeds conflict resolution, enhances crucial conversations and reduces time
and energy spent on dealing with difficult people.
The workshop will be one of the concurrent sessions on the first afternoon of the three-day Wellington conference, which
runs from Tuesday 9th – Thursday 11th August.
