Hawkshead wines scoop medals nationally and overseas
Two Golds and a Silver are the latest medals recognising the high quality of Hawkshead wines grown and produced in Central Otago.
The Hawkshead 2009 Pinot Noir took Gold at the prestigious San Francisco International Wine Competition 2011 while Hawkshead 2009 Bannockburn Pinot Noir and Hawkshead 2010 Riesling scooped Gold and Silver medals respectively at the Auckland-based International Spiegelau Wine Competition in June.
Now in its 31st year, the San Francisco International Wine Competition is America’s biggest wine awards and attracted 4184 wines from 1200 of the world’s wineries to its prestigious judging table.
The 48 strong judging panel included New Zealand wine consultant and international wine judge Jim Harre, wine maker and senior judge at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Kate Radbund, and Australian wine writer, consultant and author, Jim McMahon.
Hawkshead co-owner Denis Marshall said the San Francisco medal was a highlight for the vineyard.
“Entering a wine into a Competition is always a bit of a risk. In this instance, we are blessed. Winning Gold grows our confidence in our small vineyard and it shows that collectively our viticultural and winemaking team’s hard work and commitment to do the very best we can has definitely paid off,” he said.
The Hawkshead 2009 Bannockburn Pinot Noir was one of only 68 wines awarded a gold medal out of over a thousand international wines entered into the inaugural International Spiegelau Wine Competition held in Auckland. The Hawkshead 2010 Riesling was one of six Riesling’s to be awarded a silver medal in that competition.
