Charting Pathways for Maori Industry Futures

Te Putea Whakatupu Trust

Nga Whetu Hei Whai, Charting Pathways for Maori Industry Futures

Tena koe

Nga mihi i runga i nga ahuatanga o te wa!

As Chair of Te Putea Whakatupu Trust, I am pleased to announce the inaugural conference – Nga Whetu Hei Whai, Charting Pathways for Maori Industry Futures – to be held in Rotorua 29-30 August, 2011.

The Conference will provide an opportunity for key Maori and iwi economic leaders to workshop and develop shared visions and stratagies for the future of the Maori economy in key industries. Keynote speakers will highlight the industry opportunities ahead for Maori and you will hear international examples of tribal and indigenous trade and industry development. Twelve panels will provide scenarios and strategies across Maori industry sectors including: fisheries; dairy; sheep and beef; energy; aquaculture; tourism; ICT and technology; forestry; property development; health and aged care; horticulture; and others.

The key questions for which answers are sought include:

• What will – or should – each of these Maori industries look like in 30 or 40 years time?
• Are there key strategies that should be implemented now to achieve these visions?

By answering these questions, Te Putea Whakatupu Trust will be in a better position to develop effective education, training, and capability building solutions to ensure our people are well placed to implement these strategies into the future.

Conference attendees will also get to meet the first 30 recipients of the new Te Putea Whakatupu Trust scholarship – the Tawera Scholarship for Maori completing a bachelor degree in business and management. It is hoped these aspiring Maori economic leaders will get inspiration and direction from conference attendees and get a sense of how they will play a part in Maori and iwi Industry Futures.
