68 Gold Medal Winners at Inaugural Spiegelau International Wine Competition

Judges were delighted with the quality of wines entered into the first Spiegelau International Wine Competition, judged last week in Marlborough. With a total of 68 gold medals, 206 silver and 429 bronze, 64% of all wines entered received an award. Chief Judge, Mike DeGaris of Sydney elaborates, “This was a great line up which the judges really enjoyed. Many strong classes and overall a terrific number of very high quality wines.”

Competition Director, Belinda Jackson also commented, “Over 6% of wines receiving a gold medal is fantastic and a credit to wine producers. Wine lovers throughout New Zealand will be able to enjoy a great number of top notch wines from both local and overseas producers.” Highlights included the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir classes and ‘Other reds’ which saw wines from New Zealand, Spain and Italy receive gold medals.

Believed to be the first wine competition to use style-specific glasses, guest international judge from Melbourne, wine writer Ralph Kyte-Powell said, “Using the Spiegelau glasses was an inspiration and added significant value for the judges as well as allowing the wines to show at their best.”

The anticipated New Zealand – Australia rivalry will come to the fore at the awards dinner for the announcement of the trophies. Jackson hints, “There are certainly a few surprises on the cards!”
