Treat Me launching in Christchurch and Otago at midnight

Media Release
27 June 2011

Treat Me launching in Christchurch and Otago at midnight

Trade Me’s group-buying site Treat Me is launching in the South Island at midnight tonight, kicking off with a deal from Hell which will see thousands of $1 pizza vouchers sold in Christchurch and Dunedin.

James MacAvoy, head of Treat Me, said the first deals go live at 12:01am on Tuesday. “Based on the burger and bagel launch deals we had in Auckland and Wellington, we’d recommend people in Christchurch and Dunedin stay up late or get online as soon as they wake up to make sure they don’t miss out,” he said.

He said it was cool to be bringing Treat Me deals to Christchurch in particular. “We’d originally planned to include Christchurch in our launch plans but with the earthquake a number of businesses had matters taken out of their hands so it made sense to wait,” he said. “A Treat Me deal is a great way to help businesses entice customers back and let everyone know they’re up and running, maybe at a new location.”

Since Treat Me’s launch three months ago, 420,000 subscribers have signed up to receive deals from businesses in Auckland, Wellington and the Waikato. At last count there were 58,452 subscribers in Christchurch and 19,097 signed up in Otago. Mr MacAvoy said Kiwis have saved more than $5.3 million from deals offered by businesses on Treat Me, with more than 161,000 vouchers sold so far.

Treat Me negotiates deals that are only activated when a certain number of customers sign up to get the offer. Buyers only pay once the deal goes live. Treat Me currently has 13 staff and this will crank up to 20 within a few weeks.

3 sweet Treat Me deals

Most vouchers sold: Parakai Springs, $4 entry (value up to $17) where 11,755 vouchers sold in 24 hours

Fastest selling vouchers: Burger Fuel Auckland launch deal where 300 vouchers sold every minute the deal was live (i.e. 1,800 burger vouchers per hour)

Unusual deal that worked: Baby Loves Disco (dancing for little kids at Wellington bar Estadio), all sold out by 12 noon
