NZ short on beekeepers
The New Zealand beekeeping industry is severely short of well-trained apiarists (beekeepers), says the National Beekeepers’ Association of New Zealand (NBA).
The industry is so short of qualified and skilled beekeepers that the trade is listed on the Department of Labour’s Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL). This means government is actively encouraging skilled beekeepers from overseas to work in New Zealand.
NBA president, Frans Laas, says despite the shortage, the New Zealand beekeeping and honey supply industry continues to expand. An influx of new commercial beekeepers would help sustain the growth.
“Kiwis should be encouraged to get involved and work in an industry that contributes $5.1 billion to New Zealand’s economy.”
Mr Laas says various apiculture training courses are available throughout the country.
“Lincoln University and some New Zealand polytechnics and private service education providers offer certificates in apiculture. The relevant training courses and certificates put students in good stead for a job in the commerical beekeping industry.”
Beekeeping is the perfect occupation for those who enjoy being outdoors, love working with their hands and are physically fit.
“It is a rewarding and satisfying career. Plus, there are very good business opportunities for those wishing to establish themselves in the multi-million dollar beekeeping industry.
“In addition, it has a relatively quiet period from May to September – so if you’re into winter sports or winter escapes, look no further!”
