Dunedin post office campaign welcomes help from Mayor

Dunedin post office campaign welcomes help from Mayor

Wednesday 1 June 2011

Dunedin people campaigning to stop the closure of the Dunedin Metro Post Shop and Kiwibank in the Exchange have welcomed the help of Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull.

The Mayor has written to New Zealand Post management asking for a meeting to discuss what the city can do to keep the post office going.

The Campaign to Save Dunedin Metro Postshop and Kiwibank has collected over 2000 signatures for a petition.

Campaign spokesperson Victor Billot says with the support of the Mayor, a number of Dunedin city councillors, local MPs, the Chamber of Commerce, and Unions Otago, as well as thousands of ordinary business and personal customers of Dunedin Metro, the city is united in their stance.

Volunteers have been manning a stall today outside Dunedin Metro to collect more signatures for their petition, which has been extended until next week.

Last Friday the campaign sent over 2000 petition signatures and 100 individually signed letters to New Zealand Post CEO Brian Roche.

These were mailed from Dunedin Metro after New Zealand Post management refused to send a representative to collect them and meet with local people.

The package of letters and petitions was sent last Friday in a Saturday delivery, signature required courier pack. No response or acknowledgement has been received from New Zealand Post management.

Maybe it's time to get out the track and trace docket.
