SKYCITY Darwin Resort Gets Underway

SKYCITY Entertainment Group (SKYCITY) Chief Executive Officer Nigel Morrison today announced the awarding of the successful tender to build Darwin's first tropical lagoon resort.

John Holland Pty Ltd will commence work immediately on the site located next to the current 5-star SKYCITY hotel. Mr Morrison made the announcement in Darwin, and was joined by representatives from the Northern Territory Government and local business community.

In mid 2012, SKYCITY will unveil its new lagoon resort comprising of four super villas and 32 luxury guestrooms, some offering a swim-up, swim-out experience, built around a lush tropical lagoon with a swim-up bar and private beach.

Mr Morrison said "SKYCITY's new resort guestrooms and villas will offer the ultimate in both seclusion and connection, adding to the luxury accommodation already provided at Darwin's only five-star beachfront resort. This will be a new level in hotel accommodation.

"Each spacious guestroom will have a secluded deck or balcony, quality fit-out and the latest in-room entertainment system, creating a connection with nature and a tourism experience never seen before in Darwin".

Winner of the 2010 Australian Tourism Award for Luxury Accommodation and Hall of Fame inductee, SKYCITY Darwin has gathered the best architects, interior designers, spa operators and landscape architects to create the ultimate in luxury.

Mr Morrison said along with the luxury resort, SKYCITY believes the Darwin property has great potential as a destination for international high rollers, primarily from Asia, given Darwin's proximity to their home cities.

Mr Morrison said there has been very significant growth in this business in both Asia and across SKYCITY's Auckland property.

"We are looking to create a new world class dedicated international gaming facility which would upgrade Darwin's casino offering to an equivalent standard to competitor properties in the region and complement the luxury vials of the new SKYCITY lagoon resort.

"SKYCITY is working closely with the Northern Territory Government and looking at options to improve access into Darwin from key Asian cities, including the development of new air routes. We are also looking seriously at the operation of a corporate jet to shuttle VIPs between key Asian cities and Darwin."

Mr Morrison said he is looking forward to opening the resort in July 2012.

Once completed, those who prefer a bit of pampering will be able to retreat to the Day Spa and shady courtyards that will provide a cool oasis from the heat. Designed to relax the body, calm the soul and clear the mind, the spa's therapists will bring their traditional expertise and intimate knowledge of South-East Asian spa rituals to offer treatments in an aromatic, candlelit environment.

SKYCITY Darwin General Manager Bard Morgan said "Guests will be able to enjoy a total entertainment experience including a smorgasbord of fine dining, cocktails by the infinity pool, a flutter in the casino or an unforgettable evening under the stars at SKYCITY's famed sunset jazz on the lawns.

"For business travellers who want nothing but the best or the 'spirited traveller' looking for a luxury tropical escape, the new development will add to SKYCITY's current extensive offerings but with a new level of luxury accommodation, meeting and event facilities, restaurants, bars and personal pampering."

In 2010, SKYCITY completed the first stage of its resort expansion, creating gala lawns on the Little Mindil site as a spectacular venue for major dry season events such as the Qantas Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball and Jazz at Sunset.
