Solid Energy welcomes findings of underground audit

Solid Energy welcomes the findings of the independent safety audit of its Spring Creek and Huntly East Underground Mines. The audit was ordered by Cabinet following the Pike River Mine explosions last November.

Solid Energy’s Chief Operating Officer, Barry Bragg, says: “Health and safety is the company’s number one priority; we aim for international best practice. We regularly audit our own operations and we always learn something that we can improve on in the process. The audit was a good opportunity for fresh sets of eyes from across the Tasman to have a look at our work practices in the New Zealand mining environment and to compare them with Australian best practice.

“Unsurprisingly, the auditors found some areas for further development in the application of our systems, including better document control and more regular assurance monitoring to ensure that we are in compliance with our own standards.

“The auditors gave us this feedback at the beginning of March and we have already taken action to systematically address each of the matters they identified and we’ll be reporting back on our progress in the near future.”
