Southern Filly Series ends in a Tie

Southern Filly Series ends in a Tie

The New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series has ended in a tie after the Murray & Bjorn Baker trained Fast Love won the final leg on Saturday - the Listed NZB Warstep Stakes (2000m).

With five horses in the field vying for an outright Series win, Fast Love (Fastnet Rock x Make Me Dream) was too tough, putting in a solid performance in the Riccarton straight to record her second win by a quarter-of-a-length in the hands of Kylie Williams.

With a number of chances inside the last two furlongs, Ormond Road (City On A Hill x Pub Singa) put in a handy bid down the outside and held on well for second place, with Monaco Consul's full-sister So Divine (High Chaparral x Arganite) running a luckless third. Both fillies have joined the leaderboard with three points and one point respectively.

Now the winner of two of her six starts with two additional placings, Fast Love's domestic rating has jumped to 75 and she has now won over $30,000 in stakes earnings.

Fast Love was offered by Seaton Park at the 2010 Karaka Premier Sale.

With the NZB Southern Filly of the Year Series now come to a close for 2011, the title is split four ways with Princess Emmy (King's Chapel x Hoot N' Holler) winning the first leg of the Series, the Listed NZB Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m), No Choice (Coats Choice x Winkum) winning the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1400m), Final Touch (Kashani x My Lydia) winning the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1600m), and Fast Love winning the Listed NZB Warstep Stakes (2000m).

Each of the four Listed races holds a total of seven points for the winner, and New Zealand Bloodstock would like to congratulate the connections of the winning fillies.

The 2010 NZB Southern Filly of the Year Series also ended in a four-way tie, it was the first time in the Series' 31 year history.

Muniandy Rides Inferno to Canterbury Cup Win

Mark McNamara summed up Inferno's win in the Group 3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) beautifully as the mare crossed the line for a big win in the feature race; "what a gem of a ride from Shankar Muniandy".

Settled back second last in transit and looking no hope at the 600 metres, Muniandy opted to take the Brian & Shane Anderton trained Inferno (Yamanin Vital x Emerald Fire) on the inside of the field, as the majority of the runners went wide, looking for the best part of the track.

The move proved the winning of the race, with the five-year-old mare flying in the wet ground, powering away to a three-and-a-half length thrashing of the Cup field, leaving some good competitors, including the Auckland Cup winner Titch in her wake.

New Zealand Bloodstock graduates took the race trifecta with Don't Say Clang (Clang x Caramel Twist) and Royal Era (Zabeel x Tudor Era) running into the placings.

A competitive performer on the track, Inferno's win in the Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup was her first black-type win and her eighth winning performance from 27 starts, her stakes earnings now exceeding $150,000.

Bred and owned by B J & Mrs L E Anderton, Inferno was offered at the 2007 South Island Sale by White Robe Lodge.
Lucha Libre Leads All the Way in South Pacific

A soaking wet Randwick on Saturday saw a tough performance from the Anthony Cummings trained kiwi Lucha Libre in the Listed Comedy for Kids South Pacific Handicap (1400m).

Leading the pack in transit and taking the field into the roomy Randwick straight, jockey Craig Williams kept Lucha Libre (Pins x Libre) fighting all the way, holding off the challenges from Levi's Choice and Kirinata to win by a short head.

With only two career starts, the three-year-old filly remains unbeaten after winning her debut performance in Wyong in late March on a good track. She looks to have plenty of ability on the turf and showed a lot of determination to win the Listed event in what was a big rise in class.

A daughter of Waikato Stud's sire Pins, she is the stallion's 39th individual stakes winner. Having a successful 2010/2011 season, Pins is also the sire of the HK-1 Hong Kong Derby winner Ambitious Dragon, the talented two-year-old Antonio Lombardo who ran Anabandana to a nose in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, the Group 2 Avondale Guineas winner Ice Pin, and the two-year-old Listed Welcome Stakes winner Bespoke.

Lucha Libre was bought by Anthony Cummings from Ardsley Stud at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale for $45,000; she has now won over A$70,000 on the track.
Dowager Queen Another Stakes Winner for Savabeel

It was a stakes double for Waikato Stud stallions on Saturday with Dowager Queen the latest stakes winner for her sire Savabeel in the Listed Network Visuals Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie.

Trained by Graeme & Debbie Rogerson, Dowager Queen (Savabeel x Dower) dealt to her rivals in the Ellerslie straight under James McDonald, hitting the lead at the 250 metre mark and running away to an easy two-and-a-half length win.

New Zealand Bloodstock graduates claimed their second trifecta of the day with Vittoria (Postponed x Eurotec) running into second and Richard (Chianti x Lugano) taking third after racing three wide in transit.

Dowager Queen bought up her second win on the weekend from eight race day appearances, and made it a winning double for trainers Graeme & Debbie Rogerson, with Sweet Suitor (Bachelor Duke x Holy Honey) bolting in in the 'NZB National Weanling & Broodmare Sale 2-4 May 3YO' (1200m).

Dowager Queen looks to be a serious prospect and was Group 1 placed behind Anabandana at her last start, and is the latest stakes winner for her sire Savabeel who is running hot at present.

The Cox Plate winning son of Zabeel had Scarlett Lady take out the Listed Matamata Breeders Stakes just over a week ago at Awapuni, and has had Do Ra Mi, Savabill and Kudakulari all winning at stakes level over the last few weeks.

Bought by the Two In One Syndicate from Dormello Stud in the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale for $50,000, Dowager Queen has now won over $57,000 in stakes.

A full-sister to Dowager Queen, Molly Coco, will be offered by Dormello Stud (as agent) at the 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Lot 679.

The 2011 May Sale will include Dormello Stud's Unreserved Dispersal Sale featuring 119 lots including weanlings, broodmares, yearlings, two-year-olds and racehorses. Graeme Rogerson and Denise Howell's Hamilton-based Stud will be offering a selection of progeny by the in-form sire Savabeel and the young MVRC AAMI Vase winning son of Redoute's Choice in Duelled amongst their entries.
