Wall of Wishes for Christchurch

Media Release 10 March 2011

Wall of Wishes for Christchurch

New Zealanders are invited to head to their local Westfield Shopping Centre to write messages of support to the people of Christchurch.

From Friday 11 March each Westfield around New Zealand* will dedicate an area for people to drop by to write a message on an enormous stretch of canvas to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

The canvases, known as the Wall of Wishes will be sent down to Christchurch, pieced together and displayed at Westfield Riccarton from Monday 21 March.

“Messages can be personal or to the whole city. Children may like to draw a picture,” says Linda Trainer, Westfield General Manager of Shopping Centres. “It’s important for New Zealanders across the country to stay connected – and to show Christchurch that we stand united with them as they take steps to recover”.

Any donations received during the Wishes for Christchurch Campaign will be matched by Westfield dollar for dollar to $150,000.

Westfield’s Riccarton Shopping Centre is the largest shopping centre in Christchurch. The majority of the retailers in the centre are now opened joined by major retailers, PAK’nSAVE, Farmers and Kmart. Hoyts Cinemas remain closed at this time.

Last week, Westfield made a donation of $250,000 to kickstart Westfield’s Red Day, in support of the Red Cross Appeal. Donations received to date by customers, retailers and staff has reached $200,000 which Westfield will match dollar for dollar.
