Air NZ among carriers rapped by ACCC on online fare adverts

By Paul McBeth

March 7 (BusinessDesk) – Air New Zealand Ltd., the national carrier, has been named as one of eight airlines that didn’t advertise their airfares appropriately online.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission told Air NZ, Jetstar Airways Pty., Tiger Airways Australia Pty., Air Asia X Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia Airlines System Berhad, LAN Airlines SA, American Airlines Inc., and Etihad Airways PJSC they didn’t advertise the single total price for an airfare on each of their websites. Shares in Air NZ fell 1.6% to $1.27 in trading.

All of the airlines changed the pricing on their websites to comply with Australia’s Competition and Consumer Act.

“This ACCC action means that consumers now have accurate price information, and airlines have a more level playing field on price representations in this fiercely competitive industry where consumers are price sensitive,” chairman Graeme Samuel said in a statement. Further “non-compliance is likely to attract strong enforcement action to stop similar conduct in the future.”

The review came after Australia’s antitrust regulator conducted a guidance programme across various industries to help business better understand their compliance obligations.
