NZBio Events Update

NZBIO EVENTS UPDATE 28 FEBRUARY
The Scale-Up Manufacturing Workshop held last Thursday at Villa Maria Estate, Auckland was a huge success. Over 60 industry delegates from companies, Crown Research Institutes and a smattering of Government Agencies from Auckland to Nelson and beyond attended the event. The Workshop provided the opportunity for service providers and potential customers to listen to multiple companies and CRIs elaborate on their capabilities and the common pitfalls in Scale Up and Contract Manufacturing. Many took away valuable lessons in the issues that need to be thought of when taking your technology from the lab-bench through to pilot scale and eventually commercial manufacturing. A few of the many highlights were;

• Dr Bob Chew, President, Commisioning Agents, Indianapolis, gave a whirlwind but enlightening overview of recent changes in the FDA attitude to Quality in scale up and contract manufacture. Bob’s talk succinctly distilled the need for companies to engage early with the regulator and drive the process rather than be driven by it.

• Dr Jane Eagleson, Argenta Head of Clinical Development, gave a firsthand account of the set up and workings of a contract manufacturing company client relationship and the factors that make a relationship work and indeed flourish. Jane’s insights gleaned from having clients including some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies down to two person “virtual” companies were invaluable to the attendees. The term “Communicate, communicate, communicate” was mentioned more than once!

• Michael Sage, Partner of Simpson Grierson managed in his 30 minute presentation to highlight the great majority of legal pitfalls in the Contract Manufacturing relationship and he encouraged companies considering the process to seek advice early to enable planning and preparation for a successful collaboration.

Overall, the general consensus was that the workshop was a valuable day out of the office!

2011 Science and Innovation in Education Forum
New Zealand’s future hinges on our ability to prepare our next generation, to harness their creativity, dynamism and insight. This kind of innovation however isn’t born in the boardroom or on the factory floor. It doesn’t begin in a basement workshop or a research laboratory. That’s where the payoff happens. It starts long before. It starts in a classroom.

This forum aims to unite the best minds and innovators from Government, Education Institutions, CRIs, Industry Bodies and Businesses from across key sectors to focus our minds on the key issues that will influence the future direction of New Zealand. View the programme online to get a sense of the 3 key areas this forum will focus on.
