NHNZ scoops opening billing on 3D channel
Dunedin based NHNZ will make history this weekend when it becomes the first production company to debut on the world’s
first full-time 3D network.
3net - the joint venture television network between Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation –
launches in the US this Sunday (Monday, 14 February in New Zealand) and will go live premiering NHNZ’s 3D production
China Revealed.
The series is a co-production between NHNZ and the China Intercontinental Communications Centre, with Park Road Post –
the New Zealand post production facility behind some of the 3D technology in the feature film Avatar - contracted to
assist with the post production side of the series.
China Revealed is a ground breaking ten part series which explores China’s thronging cities, epic vistas and spiritual
heartlands in stunning 3D. The first episode which US viewers will see this Sunday focuses on the largest man made
structure in the world – the Great Wall of China.
The rest of the series explores some of China’s most iconic places, some of which the Western world has never seen.
NHNZ is also producing two more series for 3net - one on America’s National Parks and another on heritage sites around
the world. These two series are co-produced with Singapore’s Beach House Pictures (in which NHNZ has a major share) and
the Media Development Authority in Singapore.
Craig Meade - the executive producer overseeing NHNZ’s 3D content for 3net says work on the China Revealed series
started only late last year. “Considering that this was unchartered territory for everybody involved it is quite an
achievement for us to have delivered a show that a major network is prepared to stake its reputation on. I am thrilled
that 3net decided on original 3D programming for its opening broadcasts instead of seen-before 3D movies,” he says.
NHNZ managing director Michael Stedman says the company is now the undisputed world leader in 3D documentaries and yet
again it reaffirms its commitment to stay at the leading edge of both technology and content.
3net will go live on Sunday at 8 PM Eastern Time (Monday 2 PM New Zealand time) with a primetime slate featuring world
premieres of new original 3D shows. Throughout February, the network will offer an unprecedented rollout of original 3D
series and new program debuts every night.
