Conference Market Revival – Bayview Wairakei Resort Taupo

Conference Market Revival – Bayview Wairakei Resort Taupo

The conference and events market is bouncing back strongly for Bayview Wairakei Resort, just north of Taupo after a mediocre past two years, and it appears the timing it perfect with Rugby World Cup 2011 looming.

The North Island’s largest provincial conference hotel and resort is a purpose built facility that caters for conferences up to 650 persons.

The hotel has not experienced a reduction in conferences over the past two years, but the number of conference delegates had reduced, impacting on a range of internal departments and external suppliers.

But there has been a significant shift in the past month says Marketing Manager Gareth Pearce.

“The hotel has confirmed bookings this year that are looking pretty impressive. Delegate numbers have also increased. There are more full house conferences than in the same period over the past two years – so that’s great for the industry as a whole.”

“We think it has to be the fantastic central location and the vast array of recreational facilities & activities that compliment the resort”, says Gareth candidly.

And the Resort isn’t sitting back waiting for business to come to it. The focus is on the Sydney market and working closely with Rotorua International Airport Business Development Manager Rhys Arrowsmith to develop strategies to attract businesses that may have head offices in Sydney and regional offices in Wellington and Auckland.

“The international airport in Rotorua is perfectly positioned for New Zealand companies to be fantastic hosts to our Aussie friends in an easily accessible location. We can showcase our professionalism, innovation and natural beauty all at once and this will extend right into and past the Rugby World Cup later in the year.”

“Simply put, it’s business as usual for us”, says Gareth.

“We’ll continue to deliver a quality product and exceed expectations. Our message to the conference market is our consistency. The resort over the past two years has concentrated on its internal procedures and making the product better than before.

With a dedicated on-site audio-visual team and conference organizers, planning conferences and events at Wairakei is now a much more simpler process for businesses.

And due to the upturn in bookings and enquiries over the past two months the resort has had to increase its staffing level within the conference department – something that hasn’t been done now for over a year.

“The whole team at the Resort is really excited as they can see that 2011 is going to be a big year – for both the resort and themselves personally. And they get to enjoy being hosts to the South African Rugby team throughout the Rugby World Cup. They are really excited about that”, says Gareth.
