New Vehicle Sales End the Year on Strong Note
The new vehicle industry finished the year on a strong note with passenger cars up 14.5% on December 2009 and commercials ahead by 30%. For the full year new car sales were 14% ahead of 2009 with commercial vehicles 17.8% up on the previous year.
Mr Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association, said the industry was happy with the way the year ended with the final numbers in line with the industry’s revised forecast.
For the month of December Toyota finished extremely strongly taking out 31% of passenger car sales. Ford and Holden finished in second and third positions. In the commercial sector the market was unchanged from previous months with Toyota leading, followed by Ford and Nissan. The top selling model for the month was the Toyota Corolla with 537 registrations followed by the Toyota Hilux (292) with the Holden Commodore in third place with 243 sales.
Breaking down the full year numbers the industry had total sales of 80,453 vehicles which were 14.8% up on 2009 (70,048 sales). Passenger cars with 62,029 registrations were up 14.0% on 2009 (54,404). Toyota took just over 20% of this segment followed by Ford (10.9%) and Holden (10.2%). The top selling car for 2010 was the Toyota Corolla with 4,890 registrations followed by the Suzuki Swift (2,724) and Holden Commodore (2,564). In the commercial segment Toyota led with 30.4% followed by Ford 14.3% with Nissan third at 12.7%. The top selling commercial model was the Toyota Hilux with 3,454 registrations, the Nissan Navara held onto second place with 2,077 registrations with the Ford Ranger in third with 1,654 sales.
