Dairy NZ statement on Waikato River report released by MfE
DairyNZ has welcomed the release of the Waikato River independent scoping study, describing it as a good summary of existing knowledge.
DairyNZ CEO Dr Tim Mackle says “We note that in the report, the urban contribution to the river’s issues has been shown to be significant but there appears to be little mention of it in the commentary, particularly when it comes to solutions.
“Agriculture is just one of the contributors to the Waikato River’s current state, and we need to work across the community with all sectors involved to develop solutions to improve the river.
“We understand that the Waikato River Authority needs only to pay due regard to the report. We are sure that the Authority will work on the challenges outlined in a way that will address the river issues, without affecting the economic viability of the Waikato region, and consequently New Zealand.”
