Wellington Businesses Welcome Decision on Aviation Alliance
The Wellington Employers' Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the decision by Transport Minister Stephen Joyce to conditionally approve the proposed trans-Tasman Air New Zealand/Virgin Alliance.
"The conditions imposed will protect Wellington's interests and are consistent with what the business community has lobbied for," said Chamber President Richard Stone.
"Initially we had concerns that reduced competition would lead to higher fares and fewer people travelling to and from Wellington.
"But in response to lobbying from the Chamber and other Wellington groups, the airlines have since committed to maintaining and growing the capacity on the routes from Wellington and the regulatory authorities' approval on both sides of the Tasman is conditional on that.
"We are confident that the Alliance will deliver a positive outcome for Wellington and so we are pleased with today's decision," Mr Stone concluded.
