Kiwis seek tech & the great outdoors this Christmas
Technology and the great outdoors are the common themes in this year’s most searched items on Trade Me, as New
Zealanders crank up their shopping in the lead-in to Christmas.
“Apple has cast a Christmas spell over New Zealand – we’ve seen iPhones and iPods hit number one as the most searched
items in the past month, and the iPad has made its debut at number six in the 2010 instalment of our annual top ten
list,” Trade Me spokesman Paul Ford said.
New Zealanders’ searches also indicated a fondness for getting out and about in the great Kiwi summer.
“We’ve seen the regular outdoorsy favourites of BBQs, trampolines and tents reappear, and this year they’ve been joined
by kayaks and outdoor furniture,” Mr Ford said.
“There’s been some awesome weather over in the past couple of weeks and this has encouraged people to think about
getting outside.”
Trade Me experiences a boom in site activity in the weeks leading into Christmas, and last week more than 2 million
domestic visitors browsed the site.
“It traditionally gets very busy over the next couple of weeks,” he said. “Last year we saw traffic, listings and
successful sales all hit their peak a fortnight out from the big day which will be this Sunday and Monday.”
Mr Ford said November 2010 had been “building up for Yuletide” with Trade Me’s page impressions for the month – just
over 1.4 billion – 6% ahead of November 2009, and 32% ahead of November 2008.
