Leading NZ Journalist to Head NZ Woman’s Weekly

A former deputy editor of the Herald on Sunday with more than 20 years experience in news and magazine journalism will be the next editor of New Zealand’s top women’s magazine, the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly.

The appointment of Sarah Stuart, 39, was announced today by New Zealand Magazines’ chief executive Sarah Sandley.

Sarah Stuart is currently the managing editor of APN’s regional newspaper group, which includes seven daily newspapers and 45 community titles.

Sarah Sandley said today the new editor had a strong vision for the popular weekly magazine.

“She is ready to capitalise on and extend the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly position as the most-read and best-loved magazine of its type in the country. I have no doubt she will demonstrate her strengths in pursuing the vision.”

Sarah Stuart spent a year with the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly in the early 1990s before going overseas and working at the Daily Telegraph in Sydney. Returning to New Zealand in 2000, she was features editor on the Sunday Star-Times before moving to the Herald on Sunday.

“I am delighted to be rejoining such a celebrated magazine, one which has had such a proud history of both entertaining and inspiring New Zealand women over its 78 years,” said Sarah Stuart.

“The New Zealand Woman’s Weekly has evolved to reflect the changing lives of its large and loyal readership. My intention is to continue that evolution, bringing to a widening audience the very best of journalism within its mix of lively, practical reads and heart-warming stories.”

Sarah, who is married to the New Zealand Listener’s chief photographer, David White, has two young sons. She succeeds acting editor Nicky Pellegrino.
