New Childcare and Housekeeping Service Embraces 1950s Values
$45,000 of childcare costs and a paltry tax rebate of $330.
These ingredients were catalysts for a busy Auckland executive to set up a quality nanny, after-school care and
housekeeping business, called “Mrs Montgomery.”
“When it comes to childcare costs, salaried single parents and professional couples are the victims of our tax system,”
says Sharon Bennett, family lawyer and director of Montgomery Enterprises Limited.
“The same spend on a rental property or charity would see 1/3 back as a tax loss. However, accepting that this is the
cost of getting to the office, let’s ensure that we get value for money.”
Bennett has had her share of expensive but inadequate home-help, ranging from a nanny who delivered religious pamphlets
from the baby’s pushchair to one who left the children alone at 11pm, because she felt that her shift had finished.
“After a full on day at work, we deserve more than to be greeted by texting teenagers and sticky kitchens” says Bennett.
Mrs Montgomery provides qualified, capable and mature people as the domestic back-up team.
Mrs Montgomery staff are trained nurses, teachers or mothers who can manage a household, and who genuinely enjoy
cleaning and looking after children.
The staff have passed rigorous reference and police checks.
Mrs Montgomery’s monthly cleaning packages and nanny and baby-sitting services are aimed at helping out stressed working
parents and busy executives. The service costs are in line with those charged by other providers in the market.
After school care packages are available in the New Year, in time for expected new OSCAR regulations which may extend
subsidies to in-home after school care programmes.
“At $7 - $14 per child per hour, home-based care gives more flexibility to working families with 2-4 children. The
children are fed, their homework is done, and the house is in order.”
Since its launch in November, Mrs Montgomery has received over 400 applications for positions within the Auckland branch
of the company, so there are plenty of willing and reliable workers available.
