WTO Decision To Lift Aussie Apple Ban Strong Boost For Kiwi Industry

The country’s largest apple grower and exporter is welcoming confirmation of the WTO decision that will see Australia’s 89-year-old ban on New Zealand apple imports lifted saying the opening of the Australian market will be a boost for the New Zealand apple industry.

The WTO’s ruling overnight rejected Australia’s appeal against lifting the ban saying the ban on New Zealand apple imports, in place since 1921 to stop the spread of the bacterial disease fireblight, was not backed by science.

The WTO decision now clears the way for detailed discussions to start on the technical details of imports into Australia. ENZA General Manager Snow Hardy anticipates New Zealand apples on Australian supermarket shelves by 2012.

“After a tough season confirmation of the WTO decision is positive news for the New Zealand apple industry. We appreciate the work of the New Zealand Government and industry groups in gaining entry for New Zealand apples.”

Snow Hardy said ENZA’s marketing of New Zealand apples now sees them recognised as the best apples in the world and Turners & Growers and ENZA are already looking at arrangements to supply the Australian market with New Zealand apples.
