American muscle flexed at Turners Auctions
It was Christmas come early for hundreds of American muscle car enthusiasts who attended Turners’ auction of a unique collection of US-made classics in Whangarei on the 20th of November.
Around 300 bidders battled fiercely for the collection of Trans Ams, Cadillacs, and other classic American cars as a crowd of more than 500 watched on.
The cars came from the private collection of the late Richard (Dick) James, a Whangarei resident who had a passion for classic American vehicles.
Mr James’ family, who sold the cars, requested that a percentage of the proceeds from the auction go the North Haven Hospice, who cared for him before he passed away of a brain tumour in July this year, and ultimately more than $26,000 was raised for the Hospice.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the number of people that showed up to this unique auction, and it’s great to see the local hospice benefiting from the family’s generous donation,” says Graham Roberts, Chief Executive of Turners Auctions.
Sale prices for vehicles varied, with a 1977 Cadillac de Ville (not running) selling for $3,000 while one of the two non-American cars in the auction, a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, was the most expensive vehicle selling for $17,300.
The most popular car of the auction was a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Firebird, which sold for $16,700 after a fierce bidding war broke out.
Turners will be giving car enthusiasts another opportunity to get their hands on a unique vehicle with the Prestige Auction coming up on December 4th.
20 exotic sports cars will be up for auction including a 1937 Chevrolet Cabriolet and a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadstar, which is one of eight in the world.
