Family fun at the races
The Interislander Summer Festival swings into action
The Interislander Summer Festival is a must-do for those wanting the ultimate family day out that’s jam-packed with fun and entertainment.
From December to February, there are 35 different events throughout the country offering top-class entertainment this summer. It’s a fantastic day to have a flutter on the races while the kids are free to enjoy traditional games like tug-of-war, sack races and face painting. Kids can also learn more about horses with activities such as free pony rides as well as meeting the horses and the jockeys.
There is a delicious range of local food, icecream, coffee and wine available on the day, or families can pack their own picnic and enjoy the day. You can also hire out your very own mini marquee - each kitted out with a table and chairs so that you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the excitement of the best spot by the racetrack.
The Interislander Summer Festival is both affordable and a fun summer day for all ages. It celebrates the homegrown aspects of a traditional Kiwi summer by bringing together family and friends for a relaxing day.
The first Interislander Summer Festival is on Boxing Day at Wingatui (Otago Racing Club). For a complete list of where and when the festivals are taking place check out www.theraces.co.nz/summer-festival
