SPADA Thrilled About Filming Of The Hobbit

SPADA Thrilled About Filming Of The Hobbit In NZ And Future Stability For The New Zealand Industry

The Screen Production and Development Association of NZ (SPADA) representing New Zealand producers and production companies is delighted that THE HOBBIT films will be made in New Zealand.

“We are thrilled for Sir Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Carolynne Cunningham and 3 Foot 7 and congratulate the Government, senior Ministers, Gerry Brownlee, Chris Finlayson and the Prime Minister John Key on taking the initiative to broker a solution that will enable Warner Bros and the international film community to restore their confidence in the New Zealand screen production environment,” said SPADA Chief Executive Penelope Borland.

The clarification of the law relating to the contractor status of film workers will be a welcome move to give more certainty to production companies, said Ms Borland. Most workers engaged by screen production companies in the New Zealand film industry had indicated they were reasonably happy with being engaged as contractors, with the advantages that brings in terms of expenses and taxation in New Zealand and it certainly makes sense for production companies who largely work on a project to project basis.

SPADA looks forward to engaging on reviewing the Pink Book over the next few months which outlines the terms and conditions for performers in New Zealand, said Ms Borland.
