Paul G. Buchanan to return to New Zealand, will set up political risk, market intelligence and strategic analysis consulting firm.
Scoop columnist and widely recognized international security analyst Dr. Paul G. Buchanan will return to New Zealand later this week in order to establish the country’s first dedicated political risk, market intelligence and strategic analysis consulting firm.
The company's services will ideally suit government and private clients in foreign affairs, international trade and investment, defense, intelligence, policing and private security provision - clients who lack expertise in specific subject areas and/or do not wish to carry the financial costs of employing full-time political risk experts.
Buchanan Strategic Advisors Ltd will provide targeted “one stop shop” coverage of client requirements. It will focus on Australasian-global relations, with emphasis on industry and market dynamics, political context assessment, ethical investment, futures forecasting, labour market analysis and security/threat evaluation.
The company will also provide negotiating advice and translation services in Spanish and Portuguese and offer public outreach in the form of media commentary and public speaking. A formal launch of the firm, to include the introduction of a dedicated web site (www.buchanastrategicadvisors.com currently under development) is scheduled for next year (details to follow).
Dr. Buchanan is an award-winning University of Chicago Ph.D. who has held high-level appointments in the Pentagon and US State Department as well as serving as a consultant to several US security agencies prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1997.
During his 25 year academic career he taught and conducted research at the US Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey Institute of International Studies, University of Arizona, New College of Florida, University of Auckland, University of Chile, National University of Singapore, Portuguese Institute of International and Strategic Studies, Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies at the University of California, San Diego, North-South Center of the University of Miami, Foreign Service Institute of the US State Department, the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro and Center for Study of State and Society in Buenos Aires.
He has been a Fulbright, Council on Foreign Relations, Heinz, Mellon, Kellogg Institute and Association of Asia-Pacific Rim Universities Fellow and has made dozens of public presentations to scholarly and general audiences in the US, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
He is the author of three books and over 50 scholarly articles, monographs and reviews, more than a hundred editorial and commentary essays in a variety of New Zealand and foreign publications, and has an extensive dossier as a television and radio commentator on comparative, international and security politics.
Reached in Singapore before his return, Dr. Buchanan said that “I am delighted to be afforded the opportunity to give back to New Zealand some of the measure of kindness and goodwill I have encountered since I arrived over a decade ago.
“I believe that there is a need for dispassionate, objective and tailored political risk analysis in the country, and that basing the firm in New Zealand offers the advantage of being associated with a national image of honesty, hard work and transparency when undertaking business, military or diplomatic endeavours.
“Being one of the few people in New Zealand who has both academic and practitioner experience in foreign policy and international security affairs, and having prior consultant experience in the US, I believe that I can contribute to New Zealand’s international endeavours and reputation,” Dr. Buchanan said.
He said: “Encouraged in this venture by numerous Kiwis and with luck and perseverance, I expect that the firm will provide an excellent interface between New Zealand and the world, benefiting not only New Zealanders who wish to engage in foreign projects, requiring prior due diligence, but also foreigners with an interest in contributing to New Zealand’s continued development and well-being.”
