TEAR Fund monitoring damage in the Philippines

TEAR Fund monitoring damage in the Philippines

Two of TEAR Fund’s partners have been affected by the Super Typhoon Megi which ripped through the Philippines over the past two days with winds of up to 225kph.

One of TEAR Fund’s in-country partners reported that people were better prepared and loss of life was minimal, but the storm had created a lot of damage and left many homeless. TEAR Fund’s partners are assessing the damage but the true extent will not be known for some days. One of the biggest threats has been to the Philippines’ rice crops which may have a long-term effect depending on how much of the crop was destroyed.

TEAR Fund’s operations manager Jon Horne said, communication with partners was difficult and that TEAR Fund would assess its response when more was known about the impact. “It seems that pre-emptive moves by the government to prepare for the emergency had paid off and the country is in a better position than it was the last time a storm of this size hit .Our prayers are with those who have been affected.”
