Coronet Peak bows out for the season

Press release from Coronet Peak
4 October 2010

Coronet Peak bows out for the season

Following a spectacular season at Coronet Peak, ski area management has announced that it will close this Wednesday (6 October).

The popular Queenstown ski area will remain open as usual (weather permitting) for skiers and boarders tomorrow (Tuesday 5 October) and Wednesday.

The decision for Coronet to bow out ahead of its scheduled closure on Sunday (10 October) follows a weekend of warm spring weather that has created fading snow conditions on its slopes.

CEO James Coddington said 2010 had been a “hugely successful” season for Coronet Peak and urged skiers, riders and families enjoying the school holidays to head to the mountain for one last blast, with two bluebird days in the forecast.

“Coronet Peak has experienced one of its best years to date, and sadly the time has come to shut shop for the season,” he said.

“Looking at our guest numbers, current snow base and forecast it seems to be the most logical decision to make. Present snow conditions should however hold out well for the remaining two days, which are predicted to have light winds and glorious clear blue skies.”

The Queenstown ski season will continue at The Remarkables ski area where good spring skiing conditions prevail with a 180cm snow base that Mr Coddington said was “holding up extremely well” due to its higher altitude. A wide range of terrain will stay open until its scheduled closing date on Sunday October 10.

Mt Hutt near Christchurch currently has a snow depth of 165 cm and is scheduled to close on October 17.
