Standards Committee lays charges

MEDIA RELEASE – For immediate use, 27 September 2010

Standards Committee lays charges against Gerald McKay and Richard Hill

The Hawke’s Bay Lawyers Standards Committee has laid charges with the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal against Gerald George McKay and Richard Henry Hill, Barristers and Solicitors of Napier.

The Hawke’s Bay Lawyers Standards Committee is a statutory body administered by the New Zealand Law Society and is responsible for considering complaints against Hawke’s Bay law practitioners.

The charges follow irregularities which were discovered in the trust account of McKay Hill, a Napier law firm of which Mr McKay was a principal. Mr Hill was a principal until approximately 2006 after which time he practised as a consultant to the firm.

On 22 June the Standards Committee obtained an interim order from the Disciplinary Tribunal suspending Mr McKay from legal practice.
