Students pitch new chocolate ideas to Whittaker's
24 September 2010, Waitakere. As part of a class project on advertising, several students at ACG Sunderland got to pitch their chocolate ideas to
David de Ryke-Tomlinson today. David works for Twin Agencies, the sales and merchandising agency which holds the
Whittaker’s account.
The Year 7 students have been studying marketing and advertising and their task was to research and develop a new
chocolate product for Whittaker’s chocolate, and create a targeted advertising campaign to launch it to market.
The pitches were varied with students using props, storyboards and with some even acting out a proposed television
commercial. Even better they all went the extra mile and actually made samples of their proposed new chocolates ,
including attractive packaging, for the judges to taste.
Chocolate ideas ranged from sherbet-fizz style chocolate to white chocolate with pistachio, cranberries and almonds and
pitches were extremely creative including claims that the product would turn you from 'Nerd to Cool' in one bite.
The competition was judged by David de Ryke-Tomlinson and Nathan Villars, College principal. Both judges looked
decidedly full after all the tasting! The winners were Rachel Barnhill and Crystal Chambati. David said their idea,
Christmas Bliss, was in line with Whittaker’s current products and he liked the way it was seasonal.
Janine Tyler, the teacher behind this interesting project, says " I believe the key to learning is to be interested and
engaged and chocolate is definitely an engaging subject! Learning about advertising is important as this generation of
kids are growing up as avid media consumers. Projects like these help them to become savvy of that media. Reading and
listening to advertising with a critical eye, engages the brain and gives the consumer the power to make an active
decision on the product being pushed.”
