Webb’s September Sales Begin
2 Weeks – 6 Auctions – 8 Collecting Genres | Webb’s September Sales Begin
New Zealand’s Premier Auction House is gearing up for the first week of the well anticipated suite of September sales beginning Monday 20th. This annual sale reaches across the collecting genres, with an excellent offering of contemporary art, photography and ceramics as well as antiques, Asian artifacts, fine jewellery, modern design and a single-vendor sale of model toys.
First-time buyers looking to invest in art at an affordable price will have an opportunity to enter the market during A2 sale. As Emma Fox, Head of Fine Arts at Webb’s explains, “the A2, or auction tier two category offers quality artworks by reputable artists at affordable prices, with all works valued at under $20,000”. The A2 sale will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 28th September.
A new initiative will also be launched at Webb’s in September, with the introduction of a contemporary ceramics sale on Tuesday 21st. Not only is this a first for Webb’s it’s a first for New Zealand’s auction Market, as Brian Woods, Head of Valuations Department at Webb’s says “although sales of contemporary ceramics are common in auction houses around the world, this is the first time a New Zealand auction house has had a specialised sale by current ceramic practitioners ”. The ceramics sale will feature alongside the contemporary art and photography sale, to help promote the medium amongst new collectors.
Sophie Coupland, Director of Webb’s states, “the ceramic section really rounds out the representation of creative diversity in current practice and for all works in the Contemporary Art, Photography & Ceramic sale we have tried to keep the estimates at a modest level, allowing for a showcase of contemporary practice at accessible points”.
Another component of this wide-ranging sale are 22 individually painted ukuleles produced for 30 Ukulele, 30 Artists, an exhibition at Village Arts gallery in Kohoukhu, Hokianga held earlier this year. Proceeds of the sale of these pieces will go to the gallery.
From the specialist department of Fine Jewellery at Webb’s, the spring offering should bring a warm glow to serious investors and collectors, says Head of Department Chris Devereaux. The sale features a significant selection of large diamonds ranging from a fabulous 7.25ct solitaire, to some very nice examples of around 1ct, with just about every size in between. Referencing a famous Oscar Wilde quotation, Devereaux, says, “ an emerald and diamond cluster ring of exceptional quality (Lot 588) will appeal to the discerning buyer for whom Oscar Wilde’s famous quotation, “I have simple tastes – I am always satisfied with the best” has resonance”. The auction will be held on Monday 20th.
A sale of decorative arts and modern design on Thursday 23 concludes the first week of sales. A single-vendor collection of ceramics including Keith Murray’s designs for Wedgwood and Ernest Shufflebotham’s designs for Crown Lynn is a treat for collectors. Keith Murray is recognised as one of the most important and influential designers from the 1920s and ’30s and is highly regarded for his modernist designs for the Wedgwood factory.
Webb’s takes a breath and then charges right on the following week with A2 art on Tuesday 28 and the John Gibson collection of model soldiers and ships on Wednesday 29 September. These sales round out this month’s offering at Webb’s.
The evening preview held on Thursday 16th, was well attended and Webb’s anticipates excellent results over the next two weeks of sales. Webb’s will be open from 11am to 3pm over the weekend, and throughout the week leading up to each of the sales. Webb’s specialists from each department are available to talk to people about the pieces on offer or any aspect of the overall market.
