Raising Hundreds of Thousands for Canterbury

News release

Mitre 10 to Raise Hundreds of Thousands for Canterbury Earthquake Victims

National home improvement retailer Mitre 10 aims to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to help those affected by the Canterbury earthquake.

The multi-pronged appeal will get underway on Thursday (16 Sept) and run for four weeks.

All funds raised via Mitre 10’s national network of stores will go to The Salvation Army earthquake appeal fund.

“As a well-respected nationwide organisation, Mitre 10 wants to make it easy for New Zealanders to help their fellow Kiwis in the Canterbury region,” said John Hartmann, Chief Executive Officer.

“We’ve chosen to work with The Salvation Army as they already have a close relationship with many of our stores and they ensure a very high percentage of every donated dollar goes to those in need.”

The Mitre 10 appeal allows for a variety of donations, including:

Individual donations from the retailer’s 4,000 staff
Store donations from each of Mitre 10’s owner operators and local fundraising events
Contributions from Mitre 10’s many suppliers, including cash and items to be auctioned at their forthcoming conference
Customer donations collected at the till of all Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 Mega stores

“We are also working with our members to support staff who have been directly affected by the earthquake and have plans to assist with the reconstruction in Canterbury as that gets underway in the weeks ahead,” said Hartmann.
