Auckland landslip and Watercare projects winners
Auckland landslip and Watercare projects top winners in INNOVATE NZ Awards of Excellence 2010
Two major Auckland engineering projects have been named as Gold award winners in the ACENZ INNOVATE NZ Awards of Excellence 2010.
Top winners in the awards, organised by the Association of Consulting Engineers NZ (ACENZ), included Tonkin & Taylor’s remediation of the Kawakawa Bay landslip in Manukau City and the Project Storm 2 work by MWH New Zealand.
Judges said that the Kawakawa Bay project had prevented a potentially catastrophic further slip which could have destroyed a number of homes in the bay.
Project Storm 2 at Orakei, New Zealand’s largest and most complex wastewater network model, was praised as a world-leading hydrological model to help Watercare manage Auckland’s stormwater flows.
The projects were among six gold award winners selected from nearly 60 finalist projects. Silver awards were made to the Auckland Motorways, Ramp Signalling Project and Grafton Bridge Strengthening, both by Beca, and to SH20 Mt Roskill Extension by URS NZ Ltd & Opus International Consultants Ltd
The awards celebrate innovation in design and execution of consulting engineering services by ACENZ members.
Convenor of Judges Allan Leahy said that despite the economic downturn the ACENZ INNOVATE NZ Awards had received a record number of entries this year, all of high quality. Awards are made at three levels: Gold, Silver and Merit, reflecting different levels of innovation.
“The winning projects show excellence across a wide range of disciplines: structural & civil engineering, geotechnical investigation and engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, technical modelling and resource management consulting,” said Mr Leahy.
The winners of the 2010 INNOVATE NZ awards of excellence were announced at a gala dinner at the ACENZ annual conference in New Plymouth on Saturday 31 July.
