National auctioneer’s title heads South

Dunedin auctioneer, Chris Kennedy, has won the 2010 REINZ National Real Estate Auctioneers Championship, held in Auckland over 5 and 6 July. Twentyeight hopefuls from around the country took part in the competition, which is held annually.

Chief judge and himself a seasoned auctioneer, Ross Foreman says that without doubt these championships have been an important catalyst in lifting the standard and professionalism of real estate auctioneers throughout New Zealand.

Foreman said ‘Once again the standard of auctioneering skills continues to improve with the four finalists putting on an exceptional exhibition’.

Chris Kennedy says winning the competition is the highlight of his career as a realtor. He has been in real estate since 1992 and currently owns the Harcourts operation in Dunedin and Balclutha.

Kennedy says ‘It is a great competition that really tests your mettle and puts you outside your comfort zone. It’s great for growth of the individual and the industry and the camaraderie amongst the competitors is excellent.’ He advises any real estate auctioneers wanting to develop their skill to consider participating. ‘It really takes you to the next level’ he says.

The competition also offers the opportunity for novice auctioneers to test the water.

The winner of the novice category was Daniel Coulson from Christchurch. After two years in the industry, working for an office with a strong auction culture, Coulson says he has decided to focus his career on auctioneering. He says the the invaluable years of experience that others have shared with him have helped him succeed and will continue to do so.
