Investors pull back, stepping up competitive pressure on tradespeople
The number of renovation jobs came under pressure prior to the budget, leaving New Zealand tradesmen facing increased competition.
The latest Builderscrack.co.nz Tradesman Job Services Index, published today, showed that the average job size remained 10% below May last year. Regionally, Otago and Southland remain under pressure, while Auckland’s tentative recovery has continued. NZ wide, household confidence continues to remain volatile when it comes to home renovations and improvements.
The index is based on the cost of trade jobs completed through Builderscrack.co.nz. “We saw less improvement work from property investors in the month leading up to the budget. We are hopeful that increased certainty provided by the budget will give investors confidence to invest again, and there are early signs in the last few weeks that this is the case” said Builderscrack.co.nz director Keith Roberts. “For tradespeople, the market remains very competitive. On Builderscrack.co.nz homeowners posting work are typically getting more than 3 responses within several hours, with competition for work remaining high.”
