Major cultural events brought to TV audiences

Four major cultural events will be able to be enjoyed by television audiences thanks to NZ On Air investments announced today.

Montana World of Wearable Arts (WOW) will screen prime time on Prime TV. What started as a modest event in Nelson 22 years ago is now an extraordinary theatrical show with sell-out performances over two weeks in Wellington.

“WOW is a major cultural event in this country, and this year’s show will have a real New Zealand focus. As well as capturing highlights from the two hour stage show, it will follow several local designers through the competition, with interviews and, no doubt, backstage dramas,” said NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.

The brilliant Style Pasifika 2010 has also secured funding so it can be enjoyed by TV One audiences. The event began as a West Auckland community initiative 16 years ago and has grown into a kooky fashion extravaganza that attracts a crowd of over 5,000 at the Vector Arena.

“The event celebrates cultural diversity and creativity in a vibrant fusion of fashion, music, culture and dance. It brings together the best of contemporary and traditional fashions with live music and performances with a Pacific flavour,” said Ms Wrightson.

The QANTAS Film and Television Awards will also return to our screen in September, this year on TV One.

“These coveted awards showcase the best of New Zealand television and film talent. We’re proud to help support the best screen work made here in New Zealand” said Jane Wrightson.

In a quieter vein, Nine Lessons and Carols, featuring a choral performance by Wellington’s St Paul’s Cathedral Choir, has also been supported for Christmas Eve scheduling on TV One.
