Solid Energy applies for consents to continue Ohai Mine rehabilitation
Solid Energy is seeking resource consents from Environment Southland tomorrow to continue the rehabilitation of Ohai Mine.
While Ohai Mine closed in 2008, rehabilitation work will continue at the site for at least another three years to turn the area into stable, erosion-free vegetated slopes that fit the surrounding landscape. Work is currently centred around the former No.3 opencast pit in the south-western corner of the existing Coal Mining Licence area.
Solid Energy is seeking four resource consents to cover the volume of water that will be captured within the No.3 pit catchment area and discharged to Morley Stream via a man-made outlet. The outlet will be designed to enable fish to move safely to Morley Stream, and both sides of the stream will be replanted with native plants to maintain a healthy stream and blend into the surrounding area.
