Pure Wine From A Pure Place

Crafting wines that express their unique terroir, grape variety and season involves art, science and passion, something that the Davies quickly realised before carefully choosing the site of the Summerhouse family vineyard.

From a long line of New Zealand farmers, Heather and Meric Davies’ knowledge and experience gave them the foresight to choose the right site for their artisan vineyard. After two years of research and planning, the Davies found their perfect 24hectare site in the heart of New Zealand’s Marlborough winegrowing region.

“After researching the market and devising a plan, our aim has always been to craft pure wines for people to enjoy with good food and company. We noticed a demand for artisan wines that uniquely express the season, place and variety – a wine that captures what happens in the vineyard rather than the winery.” comments Heather Davies.

When the Summerhouse vineyard was founded in 1995, there were less than 30hectares of established vineyard plantings in the altitudes of the western Wairua Valley. As early innovators of the region, Heather and Meric had the pick of the sites for Summerhouse vineyard.

“We chose Marlborough as it is blessed with long hot days and cool nights. Comments Heather. “The Summerhouse site has no underlying water table, benefits from free draining alluvial soils and glacial silts, the gently north facing slope captures the best of the day’s sun and protects the site from the effects of frost. The Richmond and Kaikoura Ranges shelter Summerhouse from southerly storms.”

The variety of soil and the differing clonal material (the vines) of the Summerhouse vineyards provides different growing conditions and enables Heather and Meric to pick selected parcels of fruit at various times to capture a full spectrum of flavours.
